You might want to have a look at the FabIO Python module.
https://pythonhosted.org/fabio/getting_started.html

It supports reading, writing and conversion between many 2D image files,
including some very old ones. If it works for you, then you can write a
simple 10-line script to convert all your images to any format that is more
suitable for your work.
